An excerpt from my sermon on Mark 3:22-30: Jesus the Divider Jesus’s teachings are meant to divide and separate for the purpose of eliciting a response; and there are only two responses to the Gospel call: repent or reject. That is it

Jesus's teachings were meant to divide. But not just His teachings, He has been dividing and separating things into order since Genesis 1:

He divides/separates:

  • Heaven from Earth
  • Light from Darkness
  • Day from Night
  • Water from Dry Land
  • Creatures, according to their own kind
  • EVERY plant and tree from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
  • Man from Woman

Our God, creator of the cosmos (Greek word for order, not the opposite which is chaos) has willfully and thoughtfully separated and divided everything to function according to its own kind, but we refuse to accept His terms! We compromise and flock to the middle.

Maybe those obscure OT laws that people are so fond of bringing up–about not planting two seeds in the same field or how it is unlawful for a man to wear a woman’s clothes– aren't as arbitrary as some would suggest, but are, instead, a testimony to the fact that since the beginning, God has separated and divided and we continually flock to the middle.

  • Paul reminds Timothy, “From childhood you have been acquainted with the sacred writings, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:14–16)
    • The sacred writings teach salvation if you understand “that it is these sacred writings that bear witness about me,” (John 5:39). That they are testifying about Christ.
    • Ligon Duncan said about this passage, “Timothy, you have known the sacred writings, the Old Testament from Genesis to Malachi, from your youth. Take that Scripture and teach it. Take that Scripture and exhort from it. Take that Scripture and preach to God’s people the way of salvation by faith alone in Christ alone from the Old Testament Scripture.”

God Walking

Noun: The attribution of human characteristics or behavior to a god, animal, or object

• From the human standpoint, it is not possible to describe God’s interaction with people without attributing to Him some of the properties of a human body.

  • Back and Face -
    • “Then I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.” (Exodus 33:23)
    • “Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face...” (Exodus 33:11)
  • Eyes and Ears
    • “The eyes of the Lord are toward the righteous and his ears toward their cry.” (Psalm 34:15)
    • “that your eyes may be open night and day toward this house...” (1 Kings 8:29)
  • Arm or Hands
    • “So I will stretch out my hand...” (Exodus 3:20)
    • “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great acts of judgment.” (Exodus 6:6)
    • “And, “You, Lord, laid the foundation of the earth in the beginning, and the heavens are the work of your hands; ” (Hebrews 1:10) - we obviously know from last weeks sermon that He created not with His hands, but by His Word.
  • God does not have a physical body, the Bible is clear the Lord is Spirit.
    • “God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” (John 4:24)
  • He can manifest Himself in anything.
  • Burning bush.
    • “And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire out of the midst of a bush. He looked, and behold, the bush was burning, yet it was not consumed. And Moses said, “I will turn aside to see this great sight, why the bush is not burned.” When the Lord saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the bush...” (Exodus 3:2–4)
  • Pillar of cloud or fire
    • “And the Lord went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, that they might travel by day and by night. ” (Exodus 13:21)
  • Lastly, God can manifest Himself in the form of a man
    • Three men came, two left and this is what it says.
    • “So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord.” (Genesis 18:22)
    • Jacob wrestles with the Angel of the LORD and he says, “For I have seen God face to face, and yet my life has been delivered.” ” (Genesis 32:30, ESV)
    • “And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. ” (Ezekiel 1:26, ESV)
    • God took the form of a man in the OT, and He takes the form of a man again in Jesus son of Mary and Joseph.

I AM

  • “Then Moses said to God, “If I come to the people of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you,’ and they ask me, ‘What is his name?’ what shall I say to them?” God said to Moses, “I am who I am.” And he said, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘I am has sent me to you.’ ” ” (Exodus 3:13–14, ESV)
    • (These are not in chronological order.)
    • “Then Jesus, knowing all that would happen to him, came forward and said to them, “Whom do you seek?” They answered him, “Jesus of Nazareth.” Jesus said to them, “I am he.” Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them. When Jesus said to them, “I am he,” they drew back and fell to the ground. ” (John 18:4–6, ESV)
    • “Again the high priest asked him, “Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?” And Jesus said, “I am, and you will see the Son of Man seated at the right hand of Power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.”” (Mark 14:61–62)
      • “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him.     • “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”” (John 8:58)
      • He told Moses He was I am. There is over a 500 year gap between Abraham and Moses; He says before even Abraham, I am.
    • Jesus is the First and the Last, The Beginning and the End, The Alpha and the Omega.
  • I pray that it is overwhelmingly clear that the God who walked in the cool of the day in the Garden of Eden is the antecedent of the God who died on a cross on Calvary over 5,000 years later.

God Walked

  • God walked.
      • Running suggests urgency. Running suggest trepidation. Running suggests desperation.
  • God was not coming to terrify and display His might for Adam and Eve; He came to convict, convince, and humble them. He did not descend immediately from heaven before them, as afterwards on Mount Sinai, but He came to them like one who was wanting to reconcile with His beloved.
  • He came walking, not running, not riding upon the wings of the wind, but walking deliberately, [as one who is slow to anger, abounding in love who was ready to forgive their sin and rebellion]. He came teaching us, when we are ever so much provoked, not to be hot nor hasty, but to speak and act considerately and not rashly. He came in the cool of the day, not in the night, when all fears are doubly fearful. He came not in the heat of day, for He came not in the heat of his anger. Fury is not in him, (Isa. 27:4). Nor did he come suddenly upon them; but they heard his voice at some distance, giving them notice of his coming, and probably it was a still small voice, like that in which he came to enquire after Elijah. - Matthew Henry

Where are you?

Is God not omniscient? “O Lord, you have searched me and known me! ” (Psalm 139:1)

Is God not omnipresent? “Where shall I go from your Spirit? Or where shall I flee from your presence? ” (Psalm 139:7)

So what then is God asking when he asks, Where are you?

We ask, “What have you done?” When we clearly know the answer to the question.

This was more of a, why are you hiding?

• This was a call to repentance

• They were afraid, because of their nudity—apparently, a confession—the language of sorrow; but it was evasive—no signs of true humility and penitence—each tries to throw the blame on another.[1]

The Serpent

  • Though Moses makes no mention of this wicked serpent being Satan, yet in the fuller discoveries of the Gospel, it is distinctly implied that Satan was the author of the plot.
  • “And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years, ” (Revelation 20:2)
  • “You were the signet of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering, sardius, topaz, and diamond, beryl, onyx, and jasper, sapphire, emerald, and carbuncle; and crafted in gold were your settings and your engravings. On the day that you were created they were prepared. You were an anointed guardian cherub. I placed you; you were on the holy mountain of God; in the midst of the stones of fire you walked. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created, till unrighteousness was found in you. In the abundance of your trade you were filled with violence in your midst, and you sinned; so I cast you as a profane thing from the mountain of God, and I destroyed you, O guardian cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was proud because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom for the sake of your splendor. I cast you to the ground...” (Ezekiel 28:12–17)
  • “Whoever makes a practice of sinning is of the devil, for the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil.” (1 John 3:8)
    • Is that not what Jesus came to do in the Garden? Satan deceived Adam and Eve and the result was death. Jesus came and exposed their iniquity and instead of bringing wrath and judgement, which would have been just, He offered something else...hope.

Cursed:

  • The serpent is cursed above all living things.
  • “From Mount Hor they set out by the way to the Red Sea, to go around the land of Edom. And the people became impatient on the way. And the people spoke against God and against Moses, “Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? For there is no food and no water, and we loathe this worthless food.” Then the Lord sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the Lord and against you. Pray to the Lord, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the Lord said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” So Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. ” (Numbers 21:4–9)
  • Jesus tells Nicodemus he must be born again. Nicodemus doesn’t understand, Jesus explains to him that He speaks of spiritual rebirth. He then tells him the only way to be saved.
    • “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in him may have eternal life.” (John 3:14–15)
    • The Serpent cursed above all living things is a reference to Christ.

• “Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree’” (Galatians 3:13)

    • Jesus is the cursed serpent, who hung on the cursed tree, who took on the curse of God on our behalf, that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.

Seed will crush head

• “And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel. ” (Genesis 3:15, KJV)

  • “When Adam had lived 130 years, he fathered a son in his own likeness, after his image, and named him Seth. The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were 800 years; and he had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days that Adam lived were 930 years, and he died. When Seth had lived 105 years, he fathered Enosh. Seth lived after he fathered Enosh 807 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Seth were 912 years, and he died. When Enosh had lived 90 years, he fathered Kenan. Enosh lived after he fathered Kenan 815 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enosh were 905 years, and he died. When Kenan had lived 70 years, he fathered Mahalalel. Kenan lived after he fathered Mahalalel 840 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Kenan were 910 years, and he died. When Mahalalel had lived 65 years, he fathered Jared. Mahalalel lived after he fathered Jared 830 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Mahalalel were 895 years, and he died. When Jared had lived 162 years he fathered Enoch. Jared lived after he fathered Enoch 800 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Jared were 962 years, and he died. When Enoch had lived 65 years, he fathered Methuselah. Enoch walked with God after he fathered Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Enoch were 365 years. Enoch walked with God, and he was not, for God took him. When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he fathered Lamech. Methuselah lived after he fathered Lamech 782 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Methuselah were 969 years, and he died. When Lamech had lived 182 years, he fathered a son and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the Lord has cursed this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.” Lamech lived after he fathered Noah 595 years and had other sons and daughters. Thus all the days of Lamech were 777 years, and he died. After Noah was 500 years old, Noah fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth. ” (Genesis 5:3–32)
  • Primarily, OT genealogy says he fathered and he had other sons and daughters. Christ told Eve it would be HER offspring. Jesus had no natural Father.
  • Like the word “sheep” in English, the word “seed” in Hebrew is both singular and plural, meaning either descendants without number, taken as a whole, or one particular descendant.[2]
  •  The ambiguity of the word seed, allows room for generational children from seminal procreation as well as a reference to a singular seed.
    • Her seed will bruise the serpent’s head
    • “In your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed, because you have obeyed My voice.” (Genesis 22:18, NASB)
    • A star shall come out of Jacob, and a scepter shall rise out of Israel; it shall crush the forehead of Moab and break down all the sons of Sheth. ” (Numbers 24:17)
    • “When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever... And your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me. Your throne shall be established forever.” (2 Samuel 7:12–16)
    • “There shall come forth a shoot from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots shall bear fruit. And the Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the Spirit of wisdom and understanding, the Spirit of counsel and might, the Spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. And his delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide disputes by what his ears hear, ” (Isaiah 11:1–3)
  • There has always been a trajectory of hope built upon this singular seed.
  • It’s difficult to fathom there was only one seed considering throughout the entirety of the OT it would seem that there are two different Saviors.
    • Conquering King: “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. ” (Isaiah 9:6, ESV)
    • Suffering Servant: “Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was crushed(bruised same word) for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his stripes we are healed. All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth. By oppression and judgment he was taken away; and as for his generation, who considered that he was cut off out of the land of the living, stricken for the transgression of my people? And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence, and there was no deceit in his mouth. Yet it was the will of the Lord to crush him; he has put him to grief; when his soul makes an offering for guilt, he shall see his offspring; he shall prolong his days; the will of the Lord shall prosper in his hand. ” (Isaiah 53:4–10)
    • Even Jesus’ apostles, when Christ told them that He would suffer the cross, Peter rebuked Him. Peter’s thought, You are the Messiah, Isaiah said that the government would be on Your shoulders, You will over throw our Roman oppressors. They kept asking, “when will you restore Your kingdom? - They didn’t understand that Jesus was the suffering servant.
  • God had given man the precious promise that the seed of the woman should bruise the head of the serpent; that is, that our blessed Savior “born of a woman,” should redeem us from the power of sin and of death, through His own obedience, death, and resurrection.[3]
  • Jesus is both the victorious Promised King who would crush the head of the Serpent and the Suffering Servant described in Isaiah 53 whose heel was bruised for our transgressions and by his wounds we are healed.

He covered them

  • He covered them, but not before they tried to cover themselves.
    • Talk about the cunning of man.
    • “And the Lord came down to see the city and the tower, which the children of man had built. And the Lord said, “Behold, they are one people, and they have all one language, and this is only the beginning of what they will do. And nothing that they propose to do will now be impossible for them.” (Genesis 11:5–6)
    • Adam and Eve sinned and were ashamed of their nudity, but not their disobedience. They regretted the consequence of their sin, but not the sin itself.
      • Listen to the difference.
        • “Wash me thoroughly from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment. ” (Psalm 51:2–4)
    • They used their cunning to attempt to cover the embarrassment of their sin.
  • A sin against an infinite being is a sin that has infinite consequences. – Tim Keller
      • You cannot repay an infinite debt.
      • “For it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.” Those who heard it said, “Then who can be saved?” But he said, “What is impossible with men is possible with God.” ” (Luke 18:25–27, ESV)
    • Debt requires payment. Sin requires death.
  • If we look deeper we see God covered them by the skin of an animal.
  • In the natural order, for something to live, something has to die. Life demands death.
    • You need food, requires death.
    • You need clothing, requires death.
    • etc.
  • The beautiful truth is, in the light of salvation, in order for something to live, something has to die. Life demands death. Sin is not just an error, it is a deliberate act of rebellion against God.
    • “Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. ” (John 15:13)
    • “Truly no man can ransom another, or give to God the price of his life, for the ransom of their life is costly and can never suffice, that he should live on forever and never see the pit. ” (Psalm 49:7–9, ESV)
    • “But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. ” (Romans 5:8)
    • This was a deposit on their debt, a promise to one day come back and pay it in full.
    • “He has endured with much patience vessels of wrath...” (Romans 9:22)
    • “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. ” (Romans 3:23–25)
    • “And through Him (Christ) to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross. ” (Colossians 1:20, ESV)
    • Do you see that the crushing of the serpent’s head and the crushing of his heel are the same event? The Cross.
    • The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the whole world, is Lamb of God that was led like a sheep to the slaughter, and it was Him that sacrificed an animal on behalf of man as a picture of what was to come. It has always been Jesus: Jesus the Creator, Jesus the giver of rest, Jesus the judge, Jesus the redeemer.

The Curse

• They lost their capacity to rightly enjoy God’s good gifts. Perfection was replaced with pain (3:16a). A joyful marriage became an unequal partnership (3:16b). Happy cultivation became sweaty toil (3:17). The beautiful garden became a briar patch (3:18). Once-imperishable bodies began slowly to decay and die (3:19). And they were thrust out of their garden home forever (3:22–24). Everything that was once so good was turned on its head. As we read on in the book of Genesis we find that murder, rape, disease, drunkenness, and death were further results of the sin of Adam and Eve. And the world in which we live today is mixed-up and messy because of their original sin.[4]

  • Adam and Eve did not leave the Garden without hope, they left with the promise of a Redeemer who would bruise the head of the Serpent, take away his power to sting us.
  • “Death is swallowed up in victory.” “O death, where is your victory? O death, where is your sting?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Corinthians 15:54–57)

* This post is comprised of an amalgamation of main points from the sermon and memorable quotes from this year's TGC gathering in Chicago. These quotes were typed quickly and may not be what the plenary speaker said verbatim, but I assure you they are sufficiently accurate. There are four layers of bondage:

  1. Bondage to the law objectively. Through Jesus we are no longer in condemnation and subjected to God's judicial response to sin, His wrath.
  2. Bondage to the law subjectively. The Galatians, although being freed from the law, they subjectively put the law back on themselves. After being told our sins are forgiven, we go back to a works righteousness and subjectively empower the law on ourselves.
  3. Bondage to our sin nature. It is possible to not be under the law and still be a slave to sin. "Sin is the suicidal action of the human will against itself." W.G.T. Shedd
  4. Bondage to idols. "If you love anything more than God, even if you believe in God, then that is a pseudo god which says to you serve me or die."

"We are freed from the power of sin. We are getting free from the effect of sin, and we will one day be free from the presence of sin."

• Every other religion in the world consists of building a bridge; pylon after pylon to cross over, this process of you trying to get over to the other side. With Christianity, you weren't regenerate, now you are. You were fatherless, then instantly an heir.

• When you ask someone if they are a Christian and they respond, well, I'm trying, then they've missed it. Christianity is a change of status, it happens in an instant. You weren't, now you are. Paul says there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. Essentially saying, I was the worst sinner, now God uses me the most.

• When the Israelites walked through the red sea and they saw the walls of water on their left and their right, some walked with confidence, some were terrified, but they were all saved. "You are not saved by the quality of your faith,  you are saved by the object of your faith. When you add to God's salvation, you subtract."

"The wages of sin is disintegration. Sin invites de-creation into your life."

• God brought the Israelites from Egypt into Sinai. It wasn't until He brought them out that He gave them the law. Because I've been saved, now I have God's law. "Your salvation has nothing to do with how you behave, you sin because it is the easiest way, we sin because of our idols."
